私は視力がいい。見えているものの量が人より多いかもしれない。近くで人を見る時、ときに視線で触れている、触れ合っているような感覚に陥ることがあるだろう。私の視力は、他の人より少し遠くでもそれを感じさせる。私が見つめる相手も、遠くから視線で触れるだろうか。白目を小さくして視線を悟られまいとした動物たちよりも、白目を大きくしてやり取りしようと進化した私たちは、もっと遠くまでやり取りできるだろうか。

I have keen eyesight. Perhaps the sheer volume of what I see is greater than that of others. When looking at someone up close, one sometimes falls into the sensation of touching—or being touched by—a gaze. My vision allows me to feel this even from a distance. Does the person I gaze upon also touch me with their eyes from afar? Humans evolved with larger sclera—the whites of our eyes—to communicate, unlike animals who hid theirs to mask their intent.
